January: Anubis Replaces Train and Jumping Rules Change

The fourth Premier season began on January 21. Anubis returned to the pool, replacing Train.

Changes to the MP7, MP5-SD, and PP-Bizon

The MP7 and MP5-SD received a small damage increase, with less damage falloff over distance. Both weapons also became $100 cheaper in the buy menu. The PP-Bizon’s price was reduced by $100 as well, but this update did not specify any damage changes for it.

How Bunny Hops Are Registered Now

Landing is now registered with sub-tick precision. Jumping and landing no longer use stamina, and pressing jump within a window around the moment of landing counts as a bunny hop.

January also brought map guides to Casual and Retakes. The weekly drop pool was updated with the Harlequin and Achroma Collections.

March: Dead Hand and CS2’s New Reloading System

Two separate updates arrived in March: first the Dead Hand Collection, then the reworked reloading system. The latter is especially noticeable if you’re returning after a break: replacing a partially full magazine now reduces your available ammo.

How Dead Hand Terminals Work

The Dead Hand Collection arrived on March 11, with 17 community-created finishes and 22 new pairs of gloves as rare special items. Collection items can be bought from Dead Hand Terminals (Dead Hand Terminal), which may appear in the weekly drop.

Where the Rounds from a Partially Full Magazine Go

Since March 18, when you reload a weapon with a magazine, any rounds left in it are discarded along with the magazine. A new full magazine is taken from reserve. Unused rounds from the old magazine are no longer returned to your reserve.

Reserve ammo is displayed in magazines, shells, or rounds, depending on the weapon. Most weapons have three spare magazines, while some have fewer or more. Valve says the change is intended to make the decision to reload come at a cost.

Warning

Don’t reload automatically after every brief engagement. If the magazine isn’t empty, replacing it discards the remaining rounds. Check whether you really need to reload.

Guides in Competitive and Playing with Friends

The same update allowed map guides in Competitive and Retakes during the first five rounds of each half. A guide can include up to 30 positions, and official starting guides are available for every Active Duty map.

Friends could also join your Workshop map game through the friends list. Open Party must be enabled for this.

April: Cache Returns and the Animgraph 2 Beta

On April 1, the Animgraph 2 beta launched with revamped third-person animations. Player height on slopes was standardized, which could affect some grenade lineups on sloped surfaces.

Tip

Test any familiar grenade lineup from a slope before using it again. Changes to player height may affect the result, even if you’re using the same landmark.

Cache returned to CS2 on April 28. It was first added to Casual, Competitive, Deathmatch, and Retakes. It joined the Premier pool on July 8.

June: The Major in Cologne and a New Store

IEM Cologne 2026 took place in Cologne in June. Team Falcons beat FURIA 3:0 in the final and claimed the organization’s first Major title. You can find the rosters in our CS2 teams guide.

Tokens and the Souvenir-O-Matic

The Major store was redesigned: instead of capsules, players could buy any Sticker directly with tokens, with prices based on demand. The organizer, teams, and players received 50% of sales.

The Souvenir-O-Matic was added, letting players turn regular or Souvenir weapons into Souvenir versions with Stickers from a selected match and player. Ranked Series Stickers based on teams’ final placements were added on July 29. The store was available until September 29.

July: Cache joins the Premier pool and C4 blast becomes a shockwave

The fifth Premier season began on July 8. Cache joined the Active Duty pool, replacing Overpass. See our separate CS2 map pool guide to check the maps before returning to Premier.

How Walls and Corners Affect the Bomb Blast

The C4 blast now spreads out from the bomb as a shockwave. The wave is blocked by corners and won’t pass through walls, so take the map’s layout into account when choosing cover. A health bar shows in advance how much health you’ll have left after the blast.

What Was Added to the Armory and Game Modes

The Armory added the Spy Tech and Arabesque weapon collections, along with the Fruits & Vegetables and Auto Racing Sticker collections. The seasonal update also added new community maps.

  • Boulder, Fachwerk, and Shelter were added to Competitive, Casual, and Deathmatch.
  • Debris and El Dorado were added to Wingman.

September: Rush, Map Picks, and Silent Reloading in CS2

The Rush Hour update went live on September 22. It added a separate 3v3 mode and changed several familiar mechanics: Premier map picks, reloading, and unscoping with sniper rifles.

How a Rush Match Works

Rush is a fast matchmaking mode where two teams of three fight through a chain of random arenas toward the other team’s castle. Budgets and time are limited. A team wins the round by holding the tower after eliminating the enemy or when time runs out.

Valve’s map shows 15 arenas. The mode also has a leaderboard for friends.

How Premier map picks work now

Teams pick four maps in a 1, 2, then 1 sequence. The game then randomly selects one of the chosen maps for the match.

Silent Reloading and Other Rush Hour Changes

You can reload silently by holding the reload key, but it takes longer. The September update does not change the March rule: rounds in a replaced magazine are still lost. Unscoping with sniper rifles no longer makes a sound.

  • Blood and bullet impacts became more visible.
  • Clan tags returned and now use the Steam group on your profile.
  • Stickers can now be applied to the C4.
  • Music volume can be adjusted separately for each mode.
  • The Starjunk 95 Music Kit was added.

New Crosshairs in CS2: Pixels and Styles

Crosshair thickness, length, and gap are now set in pixels and automatically adjusted when you change resolution. A separate Crosshair/Scopes tab was added to settings. The crosshair code format has also changed, so check how your crosshair looks and review its settings when you return.

Dynamic Quad became the default crosshair, showing the weapon’s actual spread. A static square and half-outline option were added on September 23. On September 30, the update added the Static Quadrant style, outline color selection, negative gap for the classic dynamic crosshair, and a grenade crosshair during buy time.

Use the CS2 Crosshair Generator to set yours up. If you want a reference point, our separate article features CS2 pro player crosshairs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why Do Rounds Disappear When You Reload in CS2?

Since March 18, 2026, reloading a weapon with a magazine discards any rounds left in the magazine. A new full magazine is taken from reserve. So replacing a partially full magazine uses up ammo, even if you haven’t fired every round.

What Is Rush in CS2?

Rush is a fast 3v3 matchmaking mode added in Rush Hour. Teams make their way through a chain of random arenas toward the other team’s castle, with limited budgets and time. The team holding the tower after eliminating the enemy or when time runs out wins the round.

Which Maps Are in the CS2 Pool Right Now?

In Premier, the January update brought Anubis back in place of Train, while the fifth season added Cache instead of Overpass. These are the two pool changes covered here; see the full list in our CS2 map pool guide.

Why Did CS2’s Crosshair Change?

In September, crosshair thickness, length, and gap switched to pixel values, with automatic adjustment when the resolution changes. Dynamic Quad, which shows the weapon’s actual spread, became the default; new styles and outline settings were also added. Check the Crosshair/Scopes tab: the crosshair code format has changed too.
