Rust Recycler Guide: What to Recycle and How Much Scrap Each Component Gives

In Rust, the Recycler turns components and many crafted items into materials. Rifle Body, Tech Trash, and Electric Fuse are good sources of Scrap, while a green Recycler’s output depends on the power plant’s condition.

Quick summary
Green
50% to 60% output, depending on the power plant.
Yellow
40% output, 8-second cycle.
Components
Rifle Body gives the most Scrap of the listed components.
No Scrap
Car parts give only Metal Fragments; Rope and Tarp give Cloth.
Tools
Jackhammer gives 36 Scrap.

How the Recycler works

Put an item inside and turn on the Recycler. Once the cycle finishes, the item turns into materials. You can break down components and many crafted items, including weapons and tools. The result depends on the item and the type of Recycler.

Some materials are guaranteed, while others have a chance to drop. For example, recycling an Assault Rifle in a standard Recycler at 60% output gives you Wood, High Quality Metal, and Metal Spring. Rifle Body has only a 60% chance to drop. Check the chance separately from the material amounts.

Terms in this article
Scrap
A resource players collect for research and crafting. Recycling some items gives you Scrap.
Cycle
The time it takes the Recycler to break down one item.
Output
The amount of materials you get after recycling.
HQM
Short for High Quality Metal.

Green vs. yellow: material output and cycle time

Green Recyclers are at monuments outside safe zones. Yellow ones are at Outpost and Bandit Camp. Safe-zone Recyclers give fewer materials and run more slowly. A green Recycler’s output and speed depend on the power plant’s condition.

How the power plant affects green Recyclers

After Power Trip in August 2026, the base yield for green recyclers dropped to 50%. With enough power, it goes back up to 60%, and at maximum power, the cycle time drops to 4.5 seconds. The update didn’t affect yellow recyclers. The Power Plant itself now has the only red recycler: it yields 75%, but only runs at the station’s maximum power.

If an item yields fewer materials at a monument than before, check the power plant. A Recycler’s color alone no longer guarantees the old output.

What changed in Meta Madness

In May 2024, Meta Madness split Recyclers by risk. Cycles in safe zones increased to 8 seconds, and output dropped to 80% of its previous level. Output at monuments rose to 120% of the previous level to reward players willing to take the risk.

The 80% and 120% figures describe changes relative to the old output. For a current comparison, use the material return rates in the table above and factor in the power plant’s condition.

What to recycle for Scrap in Rust

Of the components listed, Rifle Body gives the most Scrap, followed by Tech Trash and Electric Fuse, then SMG Body and Semi Automatic Body. If you’re after Scrap, start with this group, but set aside anything you need for a planned craft first.

The output values in this article are current as of Oct 8, 2026. The table below shows output from a standard Recycler at 60% efficiency, according to the Facepunch Wiki. Green Recyclers have lower output in their base mode. In safe zones, components yield roughly a third less than they do at 60%.

ComponentScrapOther materials
Rifle Body301–2 High Quality Metal
Tech Trash241–2 High Quality Metal
Electric Fuse24No
SMG Body181–2 High Quality Metal
Semi Automatic Body1890 Metal Fragments, 1–2 High Quality Metal

Gears1215 Metal Fragments
Sheet Metal9–10120 Metal Fragments, 1–2 High Quality Metal
Metal Pipe61–2 High Quality Metal
Road Signs61–2 High Quality Metal
Metal Blade2–318 Metal Fragments

Compare the full result, not just the Scrap column. Tech Trash also returns HQM, while Electric Fuse gives only Scrap. Semi Automatic Body and Sheet Metal are useful if you need Metal Fragments too.

Which components should you save for crafting?

A high Scrap yield doesn’t mean a component is disposable. We’d save anything needed for a planned craft. Recycling gives you materials, but you’ll have to find the component again. Judge everything else by the resource you need.

  • Pistons, spark plugs, valves, crankshafts, and carburetors give only Metal Fragments, from 15 to 102 depending on the part.
  • Rope and Tarp recycle into Cloth. They aren’t a source of Scrap.
  • Sewing Kit gives Cloth and Rope, while Duct Tape gives Cloth and a chance to get Glue.
  • Empty Propane Tank gives Metal Fragments and a small amount of Scrap. Its output differs from car parts.

Recycle Rope and Tarp when you need Cloth. Car parts are a good source of Metal Fragments. Check Workbench upgrades separately to see how much Scrap research costs, and keep crafting components in a separate stash.

Weapons and tools in the Recycler

The Recycler also takes crafted items. The table below shows what a standard Recycler with 60% output returns: an Assault Rifle gives materials and components, while a Jackhammer and Nailgun give Scrap. Before recycling, decide what you need more right now: the weapon or tool, or the materials it yields.

ItemGuaranteed outputChance-based output
Assault Rifle120 Wood, 30 High Quality Metal, 2 Metal SpringRifle Body (60% chance), otherwise another Metal Spring
Jackhammer36 ScrapNot listed
Nailgun12 ScrapNot listed

The Jackhammer gives more Scrap than the other listed items. But a high yield isn’t a reason to recycle a tool you use. For the Assault Rifle, account for the random result too: you can’t count on getting a Rifle Body.

How to get Scrap in Rust by recycling

You can find Recyclers at monuments and in safe zones at Outpost and Bandit Camp. Since October 2025, after Meta Shift, there’s also a Recycler in the Dome puzzle. Your choice of location affects both material output and how long recycling takes.

How to recycle an item

  1. Choose a RecyclerA green Recycler at a monument gives more, depending on the power plant. A yellow one at Outpost or Bandit Camp gives less, but it’s in a safe zone.
  2. Set aside what you needDon’t recycle components, weapons, or tools you need for crafting. You’ll have to find them again.
  3. Load it and switch it onLoad the items and turn on the Recycler. Each item takes one cycle.
  4. Collect the materialsSome output is chance-based, so your results may differ from the table.

For higher output, use a green Recycler with enough power. A yellow one at Outpost or Bandit Camp gives less and takes longer, but it’s in a safe zone. Choose based on whether output or a safe location matters more for your task.

Frequently asked questions

What’s the best thing to recycle in Rust?

Looking at Scrap alone, the Jackhammer leads the listed items with 36. Among components, Rifle Body gives the most, followed by Tech Trash and Electric Fuse. Set aside any components you need for crafting first.

How is a safe-zone Recycler worse than a standard one?

It returns 40% of an item’s material cost and takes 8 seconds per item. A green Recycler returns 50% to 60%, depending on the power plant’s condition. Its cycle takes 5 seconds, or 4.5 seconds at maximum power.

How much Scrap does Tech Trash give?

At 60% output, a standard Recycler gives 24 Scrap and 1–2 High Quality Metal from Tech Trash. Safe-zone output is roughly a third lower. A green Recycler’s base efficiency is 50%.

How long does it take to recycle one item?

A green Recycler takes 5 seconds per cycle, or 4.5 seconds at maximum power. A yellow Recycler in a safe zone takes 8 seconds per item.
