What is Prime status, and why do older accounts have it?
Prime Status is an account status you can get by buying the Prime Status Upgrade package on Steam. Counter-Strike 2 itself is free, and you buy the package separately to unlock features unavailable to non-Prime accounts. It’s a one-time purchase, not a subscription.
Older accounts may have Prime without a separate purchase. On December 7, 2018, CS:GO went free to play, and everyone who had played before that date received Prime. Valve explained this in its announcement about the move to free-to-play.
The rules changed later. Since June 4, 2021, non-Prime accounts can no longer earn Prime by playing. So the old advice to keep playing until you get Prime no longer works: under Valve’s rules for non-Prime accounts, you can only buy it.

What Prime gives you in CS2
Prime’s main benefits are ranked matches, XP, and item drops. Premier ratings and Competitive ranks are separate systems: Prime gives you access to both, not one shared rank.
Premier and Competitive ranks
Premier uses CS Rating. Competitive assigns ranks separately for each map. You need Prime to play for a rating or ranks. See our CS2 ranks guide for more on how the systems differ.
Ranked matches are only available to Prime players. According to Valve’s Steam description, Prime players are matched only with other Prime players in every mode, while non-Prime accounts are matched with other non-Prime accounts. If a Prime player invites a friend without Prime, the party queues as a premade lobby. That lobby counts as non-Prime, so they’ll have to play against non-Prime players.

XP, ranks, and item drops
In CS2, Prime grants XP, ranks, and CS Rating. Prime players also get a Weekly Care Package each week. Without Prime, you don’t earn XP in any mode, so you won’t get a Care Package or a Service Medal. Valve doesn’t guarantee which item you’ll receive. Valve’s Steam description of the package also lists Souvenir items, item drops, and weapon cases exclusive to Prime.
This is about the chance to receive items, not a promise of a specific drop. We wouldn’t treat Prime as a way to make back the cost of the purchase. If you want ranked matches, the clearest reason to get it is access to those modes.
Pick'Em predictions without a Viewer Pass
Prime players can make Pick'Em predictions at Majors without a Viewer Pass. Valve introduced this rule in March 2024 for the Copenhagen Major and brought it back in November 2024 for Shanghai. You still need to activate a Viewer Pass before a stage begins to complete its challenges and earn its rewards. Valve announces the rules for each upcoming Major separately.
You still need a Viewer Pass to complete challenges and claim tournament stage rewards. You have to activate it before the stage starts. So being able to make predictions doesn’t mean you can earn challenge rewards.
What you can do without Prime: Unranked matches and custom maps
You can keep playing CS2 for free without Prime. Valve allows non-Prime accounts to play Unranked modes, use community servers, and play Workshop maps. The restrictions affect ranked matches and account progression, not access to CS2 itself.
- Unranked matches are available.
- You can play on community servers.
- You can play Workshop maps.
- You can’t earn XP, ranks, Skill Groups, or item drops.
- You can’t earn Prime by playing.
Accounts without Prime play unranked matches with other non-Prime accounts. Prime players are matched only with other Prime players. If a party includes a player without Prime, the entire lobby is treated as non-Prime. One player’s Prime status doesn’t make the match ranked. This differs from ranked matchmaking, which is only open to Prime players.
If you’re still learning the game, trying out maps, or playing on community servers, you can stick with the free version. But if you want a rating and ranks, playing without Prime won’t remove the restriction. You need Prime.
- Unranked
- Unranked matches, available to non-Prime accounts and Prime players who choose this option.
- CS Rating
- A player’s rating in Premier.
- Pick'Em
- Tournament predictions that Prime players can make without a Viewer Pass.
CS2 Prime prices by Steam region
The price of Prime Status Upgrade depends on your account’s Steam Store region. The prices below are for October 1, 2026. Store prices can change; these are prices for the package itself, not for in-game items.
| Steam Store region | Prime Status Upgrade price |
|---|---|
| US | $14.99 |
| Russia | 1,275 rubles |
| Ukraine | 650 hryvnias |
| Kazakhstan | 6,900 tenge |
| Germany | 13.29 euros |
| Turkey and Argentina | $14.99 |
In Turkey and Argentina, the Steam Store lists prices in dollars. The other regions in the table use their local store currency. Check the price shown for your account rather than relying on another region’s price.
How to buy Prime in CS2, and who needs it
You can find Prime Status Upgrade on the Counter-Strike 2 page in the Steam Store. It’s a separate purchase for your account. Installing CS2 for free doesn’t give you Prime.
- Open the CS2 page on SteamThe package is available on the Counter-Strike 2 page in the Steam Store.
- Find Prime Status UpgradeIt’s a separate package for your account, sold separately from the game.
- Check the price and buy itThe price depends on your account’s Steam Store region. Check the table above.
We think Prime makes sense if you want Premier and a CS Rating, Competitive matches with ranks, or the ability to earn XP and item drops. It gives you access to specific features that the free version doesn’t offer.
If you only play Unranked, use community servers, or play Workshop maps, you can skip the purchase. It comes down to what you want to do in CS2: you need Prime for ranked matches, but not for the free options listed above.
Frequently asked questions
How much does Prime cost in CS2?
The price depends on your Steam Store region. The table above lists prices for the US, Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Germany, Turkey, and Argentina. Before buying, check the Prime Status Upgrade price on the CS2 page while signed in to your account. Prices can change.
What does Prime status give you?
Prime unlocks ranked matches in Premier and Competitive, along with XP, ranks, and item drops. Ranked matchmaking pairs you only with other Prime players. Prime owners can also make Pick'Em predictions for free, but you need a Viewer Pass to complete challenges and earn stage rewards.
Can you play Premier without Prime?
No. You need Prime and at least Profile Rank 10 to play Premier. The Russian client calls this “Sergeant Rank 10,” so the mode won’t unlock right away on a new account. Premier is completely unavailable without Prime. You can still play unranked matches, community servers, and Workshop maps. Without Prime, unranked matches, community servers, and Workshop maps are available.
Can you get Prime for free?
There’s no free way to get Prime now. You can only buy it; playing won’t earn it. Older accounts may have Prime because Valve gave it to everyone who played CS:GO before the game went free to play in 2018.
